Goal | Students will create narrative, opinion, and informative/explanatory writing pieces. The students will strengthen their original text during the writing process by revising and editing. |
Description | During Writers' Workshop students create narratives, explanatory, informational, and opinion pieces. Often times a student's thought process is impeded by the spelling of a confusing or difficult word. Usually the student raises his/her hand for the teachers' help. With the Spelling Dictionary, the student has a personal word wall at his/her fingertips. This valuable resource has an alphabetized list of words to use. The reference book has extra lines on each page to write down the correct spelling of a word that was difficult for the student to remember. With extra lines, students can continuously return to words that have given the student a bit of trouble while writing. This will make the process of spelling and writing more meaningful for the students. Florida standard addressed: LACC.2.L.1.2e-Consult reference materials including beginning dictionaries, as needed, to check and correct spellings. |
Benefits | The Spelling Dictionaries will serve as a daily resource and an invaluable reference for students to use during our Writers' Workshop class. Students will be able to look up the correct spelling of words in a booklet arranged alphabetically. The back section of the booklet provides lists of days of the week, months of the year, abbreviations, commonly misspelled words, contractions, number words, color words, holidays, and a list of writing ideas and tips. |
