Goal

The goal of this math project is to develop mental strategies to make computation easier and more efficient.

Description

This project uses number of the day math journals to help students develop a toolbox of mental strategies to use for solving math problems. Each day the students will be given a number of the day. They will use the number to complete problems in their journals. For example, if the number is 34, the students will write the number, the word form (thirty-four), tell if the number is even or odd, draw the correct amount of tally marks for 34, show 34 using unifix cubes (3 tens and 4 ones), and a ten frame, write 34 in expanded form (30 + 4), show 30 +4 on an open number line, and create addition and subtraction problems using the number. Journal practice will help students transition to "Number Talks" sessions. This is a 15 minute daily routine. The teacher writes a problem on the board. Students share various strategies they used to figure out the problem using mental math. The teacher records the students' thinking on the board. The students look for patterns and ways to make computation more efficient. The teacher facilitates student discussions as students "show" their thinking. This provides a daily opportunity for meaningful practice. Each child's thinking is valued. The focus of this daily math activity is to find the most efficient strategy used to get the answer. The teacher can discuss any misconceptions and address them with the class and later during an intervention time of modelling and practice.

Benefits

This math project will benefit all students in my class. Each student will work problems with the number of the day. The students will write the number, the number word, tell if the number is even or odd, show tally marks for the number, place the number in ten frames, show the number with unifix cubes, write the number in expanded form, and solve addition and subtraction problems with the number. This daily math practice with journals and then with daily "Number Talks" will promote number sense, understanding of place value, fluency of facts, and help the students find the most efficient strategy to use when solving problems.
