Goal | To provide students with a real world connection between the book we have all read (Wonder) and our current goal of fostering empathy and compassion within all of our students to last throughout their lifetime. |
Description | Sam Drazin is the executive director of the Changing Perspectives organization which aims to promote awareness and inspire empathy. Sam's Wonder focused presentations runs roughly one hour long. During that hour he takes students through the journey of his life; what it is like to grow up with a facial difference, how his hearing aids work, the surgeries he has had and the social/emotional challenges he has faced. Throughout the presentation, he will make linkages to that of Auggie and what he experiences in the book Wonder. The presentation is quite interactive with a variety of turn and talk opportunities, role playing activities and an exercise related to the precepts from the book where students create their own precepts. |
Benefits | Benefits of having Sam Drazin present written by Palm City Elementary's fifth grade students: "It would teach us to be brave." "It would show us how lucky we are and how many of our hardships are nothing compared to those of this man." "It will tell people 'It's ok to be different," and they'll learn life is tough." "We would have a better understanding of how craniofascial deformities are not limiting." "It would be cool because it would be like how I started out if life, I live with a cracked back and went through multiple surgeries." "It can tell kids how fortunate they are, we're all different, and if kids are uncomfortable with deformed people they might be more comfortable in the future. Also it might encourage kids to be more kind to others." "I would understand more about them and how we are the same." |
