Goal | To create a reading room of our library. We have a large empty room that i would like to fill with beanbag chairs and other kid friendly lounge seating so that an entire class can "flop down" and read. We are looking for ways to encourage independent reading and I believe that sitting in a more casual area (rather than at a desk, in a classroom) may help foster an association of relaxing and reading. Reading should be for pleasure, not forced at a desk. |
Description | Picture a large, cool room with an assortment of bean bag chairs and cushions. Would you want to just flop down and read? I would! We already have a large room that is plenty large to support then number of chairs and such that we will need. I like that the beanbags will be mobile and easy to move on the occasion that the room needs to be used for something else. (Currently we host the book fair there which is only for two weeks out of the year). |
Benefits | Children and teachers will find the space relaxing and inviting. There will be opportunity for individual reading or a teacher read aloud. There are no distractions in this room so it is perfect for this project. It is away from the main library so while I want others to come and use it, I don't want students just wandering in and spoiling the mood, which they wont with this space. The reading room can be utilized immediately after book check out when students are ripe to open a "new" book and get hooked. It can also be used as an incentive for the class. |
