Goal | Shared reading is a crucial part of a balanced literacy classroom. During this time, students are led through a text across 5 days with the teacher. From falling in love with reading, to decoding words, shared reading gets children engaged in the strategies necessary for their own independent reading. |
Description | These are the fiction and nonfiction books your children will want to go back and read over and over again. Even in a first reading, children will be able to chime in with your reading, and on subsequent reads, they will be able to work with more depth on the word work and comprehension opportunities these books provide. This includes over 60 books that children will have direct access to. |
Benefits | Shared reading is a way for children to interact with text on a supported level with their teacher. Day one teaches children how to truly analyze their books for meaning and comprehension. Understanding how characters feel and think is important work for first graders. Day two is shaped around decoding and playing "guess the covered word" where students must use their picture clues and meaning to solve tricky words. Day three focuses on the spelling, chanting, and writing of sight words in the text. Day four is the phonics/phonemic awareness component of shared reading. A spelling pattern or phonics rule is highlighted while students learn to manipulate them into new words and practice spelling. Lastly, day five is the important work of fluency and working "beyond" the text. This could be adding speech/thought bubbles to characters or changing the ending in interactive writing. All while making their voices sound smooth and ready for the last reading. |
