Goal | The goal of this project is to get the students to talk to each other without fear and with a little fun! In addition, students will learn alphabet letters and sounds and all about community helpers. |
Description | This project is a project filled with puppets to help these young children "break out of their shells" and communicate with one another. Using puppets gives them an opportunity to talk but also be "behind" the talking, much less intimidating! The first set of puppets is based on alphabet letters and sounds to help reinforce the children's phonics. The second set of puppets is a set of community helpers which corresponds with our work in social studies. The children can pretend to be a doctor, a firefighter a police man etc. After reading books on these community helpers, they will be able to use terms and language of these community members! |
Benefits | Many people would be surprised that a teacher would say, "My students won't talk to each other!" But this is VERY common in Kindergarten classrooms. Yes, they talk when they play, but when they are asked to communicate with one another about academic areas or basically anything the teacher asks them, all of the sudden the entire class goes silent, even when they are only expected to talk to a partner! This project will help the children open up to one another and get them talking about some academic subjects without the fear of being incorrect!! These puppets will help build self-confidence in their communication skills, as well as the added benefits of learning the letters and sounds and all about our community helpers. |
