Goal

The goal of this project is to use the power of music to support my students in their social, emotional, and overall mental well-being.

Description

We know that children today are living in a world that is often unpredictable and overwhelming. Many students come to school lacking the skills to regulate emotions, resolve conflicts, self-organize, socialize with peers, or manage all of the sensory input that they experience in an academic setting.

This year MCSD is launching two initiatives designed to foster social and emotional learning: Restorative Care and Sanford Harmony. Both programs build strong, healthy relationships (student-to-student and student-to-staff). Our goal is to build resiliency and thoughtfulness as students learn positive, appropriate skills to:

*accept responsibility for their choices and actions *develop empathy and respect for self and others *learn problem-solving and social skills

There is an incredible body of research containing information that is both compelling and fascinating regarding the connection to music and social/emotional learning.

Benefits

Students will use the music-based resources listed below in a controlled classroom environment with teacher-created lessons. These lessons will be enhanced using support materials from both Restorative Care and Sanford Harmony, which also align with MCSD's Character Counts Program.

The benefits of these music-centered lessons for students will be:

*the creation of a school culture that values and embraces diversity and practices inclusion *increased ability to solve conflicts quickly, peacefully, and in a way that is beneficial to all parties *increased skill in identifying and regulating emotions *increased ability to be empathetic and kind *increased problem-solving and critical thinking abilities *increased communication skills
