Goal | I would love to add books to my nonfiction library based on student interests. |
Description | Having nonfiction books that align with the things that bring individual students joy helps them to learn to love nonfiction reading and see that there is something for everyone. I begin each year getting to know my students through conversations, journal/letter writing, and interest inventories. Once I know the unique topics that my students have interests in, I try to add a few books to my nonfiction library to make sure there is a special book for every unique interest. |
Benefits | My gifted students are voracious readers and tend to enjoy fiction reading more. Many of them have very little experience reading nonfiction literature and have a predisposition of thinking it is boring and not the best thing for them. I love to change their minds by providing books that I know will peak their curiosity and align with their areas of interest. While many of the books I have can fill student needs, I am always needing to seek out new books each year, especially for my reluctant non-fiction readers. In elementary, if skills reading non-fiction can be built, a child is better prepared for the rest of their schooling. These skills help them in other academic subject areas and also help them see that reading to learn can be so rewarding. |
