Members of Junior Youth In Government will return from Junior State Assembly with debate skills, public speaking skills, leadership qualities and a working understanding of the legislative process to share with classmates.

Description

Junior Youth In Government is a club at Stuart Middle School, and all five of the district's middle schools, which teaches students the values of debating ideas in a civil manner, while teaching civic engagement and vital social emotional skills. Students meet weekly with high school mentors, who help guide them on a process of identifying important issues in our state, researching their issues, and creating a legislative solution to the problems. Students work throughout the year creating their own pieces of legislation where they practice presenting and debating their bills during meetings. The culmination of the years efforts are for the students to present their bills at Junior State Assembly in front of other middle school students from around the state. Students go through committees, budgeting and legislative sessions where they are able to present, clarify, debate and vote on the bills based on several criteria.

Stuart Middle School has approximately 15 members with members in 6th 7th and 8th grade.

The cost for Junior State Assembly is $350 for the event, plus $100 for transportation per student. Any funds awarded would be used to equally offset the cost of Junior State Assembly and/or transportation for all of the students attending the event.

Benefits

Students that are in participation of our event would gain understanding of the following civics standards:
SS.7.C.2.12 - Develop a plan to resolve a state or local problem by researching public policy alternatives, identifying appropriate government agencies to address the issue, and determining a course of action. SS.7.C.3.9 - Illustrate the law making process at the local, state, and federal levels.

Beyond the direct benefit that students involved receive, the school as a whole is able to benefit from students bringing their skills to the classroom. Throughout the course of the year, Youth In Government students build leadership skills, and they will be able to share their knowledge and skills with their classmates as a result.
