Goal

Our goal at Crystal Lake Elementary (CLE) is to build our instrument library. We currently have one band instrument at CLE. It is a (barely) working trombone (brass instrument) that I can model on for students. Our need is a woodwind musical instrument, more specifically a clarinet that I can model technique, perform with the students, and showcase material on. Unfortunately, upon arrival to CLE there were instruments, but none of them were in working order. They were broken beyond means, missing parts, and unfixable. This request especially comes in our time of COVID where sanitation is key and it would be useful to have one instrument that is played solely by the teacher. Upon leaving CLE, I would make sure to get the instrument properly sanitized by a professional music company.

Description

This request is for a Jean Paul CL 400 Clarinet priced at $349.95. This instrument would be utilized by the teacher only to model on for the 4th and 5th graders that would like to take instrument lessons. It would also be used to model and play along with 4th and 5th grade instrumentalists during their lessons. A woodwind instrument is being requested so if a saxophonist signs up it will be easier/ similar to the clarinet to show them how the reed works on the mouthpiece and the embouchure configuration. This clarinet will also also be utilized when the different instrument groupings/ woodwind family is showcased for grades K-3.

Benefits

This instrument would benefit K-5 students because they would be able to hear the teacher model specific tones, notes, phrasing, specific interpretations to a variety of repertoire, breathing technique, and an abundance of other musical examples. I will also be able to promote signing up for instrument lessons by showcasing the instrument to the students and speaking to the woodwind family. The clarinet, which has a similar embouchure to the saxophone, will be great for recruiting clarinetists and saxophonists. This instrument would be the start of our band instrument library here at CLE and hopefully help recruit more band students. Another benefit in a time of COVID is that this instrument would only be used by me, the teacher. Before the COVID era, some teachers would use sterilization spray and share the mouthpieces/ reeds to play other instruments. This is obviously not an option anymore.
