Goal | Students in the MCHS Art Program are currently creating portraits of and for children in Sierra Leone. Students focus on portraiture and capturing the likeness of a child through drawing and painting techniques. A $15 fee is mailed along with each portrait delivered to a child in Sierra Leone by the non-profit organization called Memory Project. These fees are the only source of funding for the Memory Project and what makes this unique opportunity possible. |
Description | Memory Project is a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, and extreme poverty. Martin County High School has been matched with 25 children from Sierra Leone for this year's Memory Project. https://www.memoryproject.org/ has details about this amazing projects and examples of projects done in the past. |
Benefits | This project uses art to reach a distant destination and promote a kinder world in which all youth see themselves in one another regardless of differences in their appearance, culture, religion, or the circumstances of their lives. Students learn more about art and get to do so in a more meaningful way through this project. Once completed, students will be able to view a video of the portraits being delivered to the children. |
