Goal | As a 4th grade group, we want to provide all 105 students, with the experience of a field trip to the Jupiter Lighthouse to make the text to real world connection between our favorite historical fiction novel, Kidnapped in Key West, that takes place in a lighthouse similar to the Jupiter Lighthouse. Many of our students have never traveled to a lighthouse and this field trip will enrich their learning experience and will make a historical fiction novel come to life. We would like to provide assistance to students in covering the $4 admission per student x 105 students = $420.00. Students will provide the transportation cost of $6 per student on their own. |
Description | Looking out across the ocean, feeling the strong breeze sweep across my face and glancing down from the lighthouse, I am reminded of my favorite 4th grade read aloud, Kidnapped in Key West. The main character, Eddie Malone, is on a mission, during the time that the Flagler Railroad is being built across the Florida Keys to the final destination point of Key West. Throughout the story, Eddie faces hardships, including hiding out in the famous Key West Lighthouse. |
Benefits | The students will climb the 105 steps to the top of the Jupiter Lighthouse to view our local waterways and connect with the main character in the book, Kidnapped in Key West. They will learn about our local history and the reason why the Jupiter Lighthouse was an important part of our area. |
