Goal

The goal of this project is to prepare students with disabilities within the self-contained classroom setting for adult living by providing a monthly opportunity for the class to work as a team to cook a meal.

Description

Our class will vote on the meal they would like to prepare. They will work as a team to make a grocery list of ingredients. Our class will then have a community-based instructional field trip where the students with supervision will use public transit to travel to a local grocer. The students will work in small groups to locate all the ingredients on the class shopping list. Our class needs funding to make these purchases at the grocery store. The next day, each student is assigned a job to either set the table, prepare a portion of the meal, or clean up after the meal. Our class has a monthly lunch together that the students are very proud that they prepared.

Benefits

This project fosters independence for my students while providing an opportunity for them to learn how to access the community through travel-training.
