Goal

My goal is to support Black, Indigenous, Latinx and other students of color in the classroom by ensuring that they have texts reflecting their heritage and culture. This is especially critical in Social Studies, with the goal of educating an informed and active citizenry.

Description

Over the summer, I have been exploring ways to bridge our existing Social Studies curriculum, our state Social Studies standards, and the Social Justice standards outlined by Teaching Tolerance. I created a list of children's books to pair with each issue of Studies Weekly that: 1) link to state standards; 2) reflect diverse cultures; 3) exemplify democratic engagement; and 4) start important conversations about history.

I am hoping to garner enough community support to purchase this list of books for my second grade classroom, with the intention of sharing and supporting my grade-level team. (The books on this list are books that I do not have in my own, personal library OR in our school library at the time of this request.)

Benefits

The Martin County School Board recently approved a resolution "condemning racism and affirming the district's commitment to an inclusive school environment for all." In addition to being the right thing to do, supporting BIPOC students through culturally relevant Social Studies texts and teaching Social Justice standards will: 1) strengthen student engagement; 2) affirm student identity and community; 3) uphold democratic ideals of civic involvement; and 4) promote a safer, more supportive school environment.

(Please Note: All prices listed are full cover value because I would like to purchase these books through a local, BIPOC-owned store called Pyramid Books.)
