3D Engineering & Designing

Date 12/29/2024

School Hidden Oaks Middle School (HOMS)
Grade 6-8
Subject STEAM - Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts and Math
Goal

The Goal of 3D Engineering & Designing Project is to engage my students in real-world problems involving designing and creating prototypes of innovative solutions. If this project is funded, Hidden Oaks Middle School students would learn all about 3D printing and become designers of 3D solutions. The funds would provide my 6 classes of approximately 130 students with a 3D printer and filament to get us started.

Description

3D Engineering & Design project would allow students in grades 6-8th grade become innovative problem-solvers using graphic design tools such as Tinkercad to create prototypes and products that help solve everyday problems. Students will learn the past, present, and future of 3D printing. Students will explore the large facet of career opportunities that 3D printing intermingles with. Students will be excited to come to class to work on their 3D designs and then see them come to life and in their hands.

Benefits

3D Engineering & Design benefits in so many ways; to name a few, students will gain knowledge of how 3D machines work. Students will work together to problem-solve using 21st Century Career readiness skills such as using apps and software to design, save files in STL formats, then slicing to xcode so the machine can read and print it in layers. Students will gain understanding of patience, perseverance, and gain confidence as they work through the trials and errors of printing designs. The best part about learning with 3D printing is that the students are the leaders of their learning; they badly desire their product to be perfect so they will keep going back to the table to figure out solutions until they have figure it out. One last benefit the project will bring to the students is knowledge of marketing products. Students will gain understanding of how technology gadgets are priced, and supply and demand determine pricing.
