Goal

The goal of this project is to inspire students to engage in the process of learning letter sound patterns, word parts of a whole (prefixes, suffixes and roots), and word meaning through an exciting game-like digital program in a one to one laptop classroom serving two classes of third grade students.

Description

VocabularySpellingCity.com is a highly engaging digital program where students receive differentiated instruction and opportunities to practice in a game-like format for phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and word meaning. Students gain individual and secure access to the program from home or school by way of a teacher created classroom website. The program supports the small group explicit instruction students will receive from me. Outside of small group instruction, students have choice of a wide variety of engaging games and activities which are fully animated with characters and story lines. They can choose (or be assigned) activities for spelling their words, matching definitions with words, completing word puzzles, indentifying their words in and out of context, sentence reading and completion, and more. The program provides students with immediate, encouraging feedback on their progress as well as redirection for needed corrections for each of their responses. They earn points for accuracy and fluency as they complete each game or task. They can take practice quizzes to monitor their progress and a final assessment as they complete each unit. The program's reports and activities mode enables me to monitor their progress and make individually appropriate adjustments to instruction as needed.

Benefits

Students' sight word recognition as well as their knowledge and use of letter/sound patterns within words is greatly enhanced. Differentiated, explicit teaching combined with the use of this outstanding program help students stay actively engaged while aquiring skills needed to build reading and writing fluency that transfer to independent reading and writing situations.
