| Goal | Students with autism spectrum disorder in Pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade will have an opportunity to check out Play Skill Kits. Each kit will include all supports needed to impact increased core language and play skills. |
| Description | Kits will be developed to teach simple play skills and increase core language including the materials needed for the activity, visual supports and video instruction. Parents of children enrolled at HOPE or parents in need of support in other settings will check out the kit to take home and engage their child in the play skill included. A speech language pathologist and ESE teachers will support play through video instructions for parents that prompts use of core language that focuses on social and language development as well as the play skill. Parents will be asked to complete a survey when returning each kit so that materials and videos can be adjusted to continue to meet the needs of the parent and help the child to develop appropriate social and increased language skills that will support the child in the future. |
| Benefits | Parents are ultimately responsible for helping their child develop functional, readiness, and language skills that will help them be successful in life. Parents of children with autism often feel unsuccessful engaging their child in social activities or teaching their child to play. Play skills are the foundation for future development academically and socially while also helping children learn about demonstrating good character. This project provides the materials and the support for parents of children with autism to teach their child functional play skills, core language, and to learn how to demonstrate good character in social settings. |
