Day in the Life of a Forensic Pathologist - Pig Autopsy

Date 09/18/2022
Teacher Drumm, Natalie
School Martin County High School
Grade 9-12
Subject STEAM - Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts and Math
Goal

This project takes place at the end of the year and is a culmination of many units we studied in Forensics Science this year. Students will step into the shoes of a Forensic Pathologist and determine the cause of death through performing an autopsy on a fetal pig.

Description

Throughout Forensic Science, students learn about different causes of death and the evidences that support those conclusions. They also learn about the process of autopsy and report writing for future use in courts of law. This week-long activity has students work as a team of pathologists to precisely perform all the steps of an autopsy and record detailed quantitative and qualitative data on thier fetal pig. Ultimately, a death certificate presentation is made by thier team to the class. Using the skills learned in the death investigation unit, students will analyze the evidence to determine cause and manner of death and present it to the class. The scientific process of peer review allows each team an opportunity to defend thier conclusions amongst their peers.

Benefits

This activity allows students to gain hands on experience in the field of science and challenges their analytical thinking skills. Based on student feedback, this project in particular gives students an amazing experience that they never forget. They are engrossed in what they are doing, excited to come to the lab and gear up for that day's activities and even more excited to find out what has happened to their patient. With every day that passes, you can see thier curiosity deepen and lab skills become more refined. Following detailed, multi-stepped procedures, recording precise data, translating that data into a presentation and cooperating with a team to accomplish a complicated task are all skills that benefit students regardless of what career path they choose.
