Willoughby Learning Center Sensory Garden Butterfly Garden certification & Wildlife Support

Date 08/03/2026
Teacher Mulberry, Janine
School Willoughby Learning Center
Grade 6-8
Subject Social/Emotional Learning
Goal

The Willoughby Sensory Garden will be seeking Certification as a Butterfly Garden Designee, and support all of the wildlife that lives and thrives at our campus locale. This is a focus of our garden area that will be a positive foundation for the wildlife we have, but also attract and support pollinators, necessary for our gardens. As well, educational resources will enhance our curriculum across all subject areas so that students will learn about our native wildlife and how important they all are to our ecosystem.

Description

A list of support supplies, items, plants, seeds, feeders, waterers, signage and the like are needed. These items will support our Garden's dedication to our native life which includes resident gopher tortoises, numerous native birds, frogs, snakes, lizards, bees, butterflies, dragon flies, and of course - squirrels. Fun fact, when my own kids were enrolled at PWE years ago, our area panther was seen on more than one occasion!

Benefits

As a component of our diverse Sensory Garden area, native support and certified recognition will be a feather in the cap of our students (we have all grades, K-age 21) and faculty. Students who may/likely have never been introduced to the names of birds they see everyday, the fact that our gopher tortoises are even more in need of our support due to new critically endangered designation, and how much we need bees in our lives will gain an appreciation of how these creatures are necessary to us all. The other primary benefit of this component is that it will support our garden areas for pollination, as we are going to be growing edible foods!
