Our goal in 11th grade ELA at Jensen Beach High School is to take our juniors to view "The Great Gatsby" at The Kravis in Palm Beach to coincide with reading the book 2nd quarter. We believe this will be highly beneficial and therefore warrants funding to allow those students who wouldn't be able to pay to attend, allowing equal access for all. Even if the entirety cannot be funded, we would be grateful for even partial funding to offset the cost for students.

Viewing the play allows for meeting all of the following standards & participating in the activities listed upon return from the play: ELA.11.R.1.1 (Literary Elements): Evaluate how key elements enhance or add layers of meaning and/or style in a literary text. Application: Students look at how the written setting, plot, characterization, conflict, point of view, theme, and tone shift or deepen when translated onto a physical stage. ELA.11.R.3.3 (Comparative Reading): Compare and contrast the ways in which contextual factors influence the choice of structural and rhetorical elements in two or more texts. Application: Students analyze how the constraints and freedoms of a performance (such as lighting, actor delivery, and staging) contrast with the text version. ELA.11.C.1.3 (Literary Analysis): Write literary analyses to support claims, using logical reasoning, credible evidence from sources, and elaboration, demonstrating an understanding of literary elements. Application: Students write a comparative essay analyzing the choices a director made versus the author’s original text. ELA.11.C.2.1 (Oral Presentation): Present information orally, with a logical organization, coherent focus, and credible evidence. Application: Students engage in a structured Socratic seminar or classroom presentation reviewing the performance against the book.
