Makerspace: From Ideas to Inventions

Date 08/18/2026
Teacher Baumgartner, Cherie
School Jensen Beach Elementary
Grade K-5
Subject STEAM - Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts and Math
Goal

The goal of the Makerspace Construction project is to provide students with hands-on opportunities to design, build, problem-solve, and create. Students will use safe, kid-friendly construction tools and materials to turn their ideas into working models and prototypes while developing STEAM, critical-thinking, and collaboration skills.

Description

Makerspace Construction will add a hands-on building component to our Makerspace. Using a kid-friendly ChompSaw cardboard cutter, construction accessories, cardboard construction kits, reusable cardboard screws, and corrugated cardboard, students will be able to safely cut, connect, build, test, and redesign their own creations.

Students will work individually and in teams to complete design challenges connected to STEAM, literacy, and real-world problem solving. Projects may include designing structures, creating inventions, building models related to books or classroom learning, and developing solutions to engineering challenges.

The materials will allow students to experience the complete design process: imagine, plan, create, test, improve, and share. Rather than only learning about engineering and design, students will have the opportunity to actually become designers, builders, and problem-solvers.

Benefits

This project will give students an engaging way to learn through hands-on experiences. Students will strengthen creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and perseverance as they work through the design process.

Makerspace Construction will also provide opportunities for students who thrive with hands-on learning to demonstrate skills and talents that may not always be visible through traditional classroom activities. Because many of the tools can be reused year after year, this project will continue to benefit students across multiple grade levels.

Most importantly, students will learn that their ideas can become something real. They will be encouraged to take an idea, build it, learn from what does not work, make improvements, and try again.
