Description

What really makes someone successful? Is it talent and hard work, or do opportunity, culture, timing, and circumstance play a larger role than we realize?

I am requesting a classroom set of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success for my 9th-grade Pre-AP English 1 students. As students transition into high school, and a Pre-AP class, I want to challenge them with engaging nonfiction that encourages them to question assumptions, examine evidence, and think critically.

Through Gladwell’s stories and arguments, students will explore ideas about success, opportunity, perseverance, culture, and the “10,000-hour rule.” They will learn to evaluate an author's claims, analyze how evidence and real-world examples are used to develop an argument, distinguish between compelling storytelling and convincing evidence, and ultimately decide whether they agree with Gladwell's conclusions.

Benefits

Having a classroom set will allow every student to actively annotate, discuss, question, and analyze the same text together. We will use Outliers not simply as a book to read, but for meaningful discussions, analytical writing, research, and debate.

My goal is for my students to finish this text thinking about the way authors construct arguments, and the way they define success in their own lives. Your support will help put a thought-provoking, accessible piece of nonfiction into their hands and give them the opportunity to become stronger readers, writers, and critical thinkers.
