Grade 8th Grade
Subject Science
Goal

The goal of this project is to procure fetal pigs for comprehensive dissection and detailed anatomy study with eighth-grade students who are enrolled in Biology I Honors. Through hands-on examination of preserved specimens, students will gain deeper insights into the internal organ systems, anatomical structures, and physiological relationships that characterize mammalian biology.

Description

Students will work collaboratively with a partner to conduct a detailed dissection of a fetal pig over the course of a three-day class period. During this hands-on investigation, they will carefully examine and document the external anatomical features and internal organ systems of the specimen. This comprehensive dissection experience will serve as a foundational study that students will reference and compare to human anatomy during the final unit of the school year, when the class explores the structure and function of human body systems.

Benefits

Students enrolled in Biology I Honors at Stuart Middle School will engage in a sophisticated dissection exercise that challenges them to work at an rigorous academic level. Through this detailed and methodical dissection, students will develop the analytical and technical skills expected of honors-level biology students.
