Subject Social/Emotional Learning
Goal

The goal of the AMS Recycling Team is to provide students in the Intellectual Disabilities (IND) units, grades 6–8, with meaningful opportunities to develop life skills, social skills, work readiness, and character while contributing positively to the Anderson Middle School community. Through weekly recycling and campus beautification activities, students will build confidence, independence, and pride while interacting with their general education peers and becoming active contributors to a cleaner, more environmentally responsible campus.

Description

The AMS Recycling Team will be a student-led service-learning initiative involving students in the IND units. Students will collect recyclable materials from classrooms and designated collection areas across campus at least once each week, with additional collection opportunities incorporated as classroom schedules permit.

As members of the AMS Recycling Team, students will travel throughout the school campus, interact with peers and staff, practice communication and teamwork skills, and take responsibility for maintaining a clean and welcoming learning environment. The program will promote inclusion by increasing opportunities for students with disabilities to engage with the broader school community in meaningful ways.

The initiative aligns directly with the Character Counts! Six Pillars of Character by teaching and reinforcing:

Trustworthiness through reliability and commitment Respect for the environment, peers, and school property Responsibility through assigned recycling duties Fairness through teamwork and shared participation Caring for the school and environment Citizenship through service to the school community

Benefits
